Region IV of the SSA is comprised of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and includes nine or ten (depending on how you count them!) soaring clubs which, in turn, have just under 700 SSA members. There are no commercial soaring operations in the Region.
The SSA Clubs are:
Atlantic Soaring, Blue Ridge Soaring Society, Cumberland Soaring Group, Merlin Soaring, Mid-Atlantic Soaring Association, Shenandoah Valley Soaring, Skyline Soaring, Springwood Soaring, and Tidewater Soaring. (Brandywine Soaring, which has a mailing address in Delaware, flies out of an airport in Pennsylvania, which is in SSA's Region II.)
There are two other non-SSA Club soaring operations, the Flying Cow Farm in Lovettsville, VA (a private field) and at St. Mary's, MD.
There is a plan provided by the SSA's "Future Restructuring Task Force" to consolidate, by the end of 2010, Region IV and Region II into a single Region. This move is one of several similar changes that reflect the consensus of the Board that a smaller number of Directors (there are presently 26) will be a more effective group, and works toward the goal of having each Regional Director represent approximately the same number of SSA members.
The Current Regional Director is Jim Kellett, who lives in Harrisonburg, VA. E-mail contact Jim@Kellett.com.
Each State also has a SSA State Governor who works to promote soaring within his/her State. In Region IV, they are:
Virginia - Penn Smith
Maryland - Tim Collins
West Virginia - Fred Bane
Delaware - Oliver Suddard
